Story 1. Songdo Infighter & Outboxer teams

The fighters of Songdo are gathered in one place.
The rule of coexistence among neighbors.

As the first month of the year 2018 draws to an end, we visited a gym in Songdo.
This boxing gym is where two of our Oxfam Trailwalkers train.
The Songdo Infighter and Songdo Outboxer teams are hard at work.
What exactly is the story behind these two teams taking part in the 2018 Oxfam Trailwalker? We met up with them to find out more.

“Competing 100km in under 38 hours ”, It’s not an easy challenge. Those taking a shot at it surely have some fascinating stories to share.

Let's introduce!

"My mother recommended it to me since I love sporting activities. When I first heard about it, my heart fluttered with excitement.".
Ha-young Song / From Team Songo Fighter, She is the manager and a boxer as well as an art therapist.

"Might as well do some good while breaking a sweat! I took part since it’s for a great cause.   "
Won-jae Jung / The owner of the Songdo Boxing Gym, He believes life is all about taking on new challenges.

"The coach always told me you box with footwork not with your fist. So I decided to be a part of it. "
Sung-won Lee / Another Songdo Boxer: a Chef of 19 years experience

"At first I was a little afraid and concerned. But after reading about past participants’ stories, I was convinced this is something I must do."
Na-mi Sohn / A beauty who thrives on pushing herself to the limit by taking part in the Trailwalker.

"I’ve already lived half my life, so for the remainder of it, I want to do something that can help me make fond memories and find the answer to the meaning of my life.  "
In-hwan Cho / The gym owner’s old friend who loves to be a part of grand sporting events

"I have one legitimate reason: Doing something great with amazing people. I’m taking the plunge without hesitation. "
- Sun-ah Jung / The significant other of outboxer supporter Cho Jang-won

Donation funding is made all the more fun and meaningful when little by little people come together to create something great

( more : http://www.sedaily.com/NewsView/1OOYESS7TC, 23th DEC,2017,Seoul daily)

The donation funding efforts by Songdo Infighter and Songdo Outboxer team surpassed 2 million and 1.1 million won by January 2018.

They became the stars of the donation story that highlighted how much the recipients and the givers had a fun time. Oxfam trailwalker’s purpose is about giving something back while taking on a challenge. In tune with such efforts, Songdo Infighter and Songdo Outboxer teams are hard at work coming up with their own unique donation funding activities.
The story of their donation funding begins now

Donation funding story 1. A chance to spar with the gym owner
"With gloves on both fists, the trainees are hard at work. Chung Won-jae the gym owner and trainer hears them chanting “One more time!" As the punches land on his mitts, he smiles. Everytime they say One more time, they donate 3 thousand won in a small bin between the sandbags, and Chung takes on the challengers for one more round, that’s 3 more minutes.

Introduction to the purpose of the trailwalker donation campaign Is attached on the mirror at the gym.
"Give and Take with your trainer &"
1 minute mitt punching for a 1000 won donation
1 round of mitt punching for a 3000 won donation
1 round of sparring lesson for donations of 5000 won or more

The trainer and the trainees are actively taking part in this donation funding campaign

[Ha-young Kim]
"To train with the owner one on one is a very rare opportunity. It beats training alone. There’s nothing like getting in the ring to be personally trained. And if the trainer is Mr. Chung, that’s a whole new experience.Mr. Chung suggested donation via talent. Other than the basics, sparring will cost 3 thousand won per round. For him to actually be your sparring partner, that will mean 5 thousand won donations."

[Na-mi Sohn]
"Initially people start with the idea of making the most of what they donated. But they realized what a great learning experience it is, and so, they kept on coming back to make use of the opportunity. It’s a great way to give back to society while honing your boxing skills."

[Won-jae Jung]
"Some ask if they can use credit cards. Most of our members are happy they can get a one-on-one lesson while being a part of a wonderful donation funding activity."

Donation funding story 2. You get what you give!

[Sung-won Lee]
"4 of our members run their own business. So they set up their own Oxfam trailwalker donation box. I own a restaurant named Jindaegam. Another member owns a Japanese style Izakaya. We give miniature boxing gloves and desserts to donors. They’re all into boxing, so they love to own one. The mini gloves are so adorable."

Mini gloves are displayed to be sold at the gym along with the donation box.
We came up with the idea for the gloves at our meeting. Kim Ha-young who leads the meetings created the donation box.

Gift funding activities are carried out in 4 private businesses run by members.
In just a month the 4 boxes were full.

[Sun-ah Jung]

"Every time a customer foots the bill I tell them it’s for a good cause and explain how it works. They love the idea and show strong support. I offer them seaweed in return for their donations, but many choose to simply just give donation without taking the seaweed. Such small gestures really keep me going.   "

Donation funding story 3. start with taking small interests in the activities!

A collection of bottles can be seen in one corner of the gym. Whenever members find empty bottles they are brought here.

[Sun-ah Jung]
"We have made a special bag to collect empty bottles to raise money for Oxfam Trailwalker. While the money that can be earned from an empty bottle is a very small amount, we think this is a meaningful opportunity to learn how these small contributions come together and turn into something big that can help someone."

[In-hwan Cho]
"Every time I meet my friends, I tell them about my trailwalker acitivities. It’s not just about walking or pushing yourself, it’s also about donation funding to help those in need. While talking about it we delve deeper into related issues. News spreads through word of mouth and the donation funding ideas and efforts continue to grow."

※ Touching stories  ※

“My friend’s mother had to go under the knife due to cancer. Even in this bleak situation, the friend decided to take part in donation activities when I talked about trailwalker. I was moved by how the friend would muster up the enthusiasm and take interest in helping others even while going through a challenging period in life. I was all the more motivated to continue donation funding efforts. ”
– Sung-won Lee -

“My two daughters have different spending habits. “The older one saves, while the younger one quickly spends her allowance. The younger one was eager to donate, while her sister was puzzled as to why we should help people we don’t even know. But after watching the joy in her sister’s face, she was convinced. They don’t have much to spare, but to me, as their mother, I’m touched and grateful for the chance for them to learn what it means to do something for others by sharing. I hope this Oxfam Trailwalker event provides a chance for children to look up to their moms to learn the meaning of taking on new challenges and the joy of giving.  "
